The GIS Alliance Summer Mapping Program provides a unique opportunity for high school students in Bingham county and

throughout South east Idaho.  This program provides a working and learning environment with emphasis on teamwork,

problem solving, work ethnic and preservation of our Idaho Heritage.  Students experience a sense of community by

collecting and recording sound, usable technical data for various land managers, provide maps of progress, develop weed

awareness materials and give many students and each student creates a special project of his or her own choice.

The nucleus funding is provided by the Idaho State Department for Agriculture Noxious Weed Cost Share Program.  Each dollar provided by the Department of Ag translates into a three dollar match by other partners in the form of cash, labor, or equipment.  However, the true measure of the program success lies in the ability of these students to relay the message to the public that good, sound weed management protects our Idaho Heritage.

The program started in 2000 with two students and by 2007 over 100 students have participated.  The results have been wonderful.  About 40 percent of the students continue to use their learned skills in the Agricultural of Natural Resource Fields of study or work.  Thousands of acres have been monitored for noxious weeds and hundreds of acres of non-native invasive plants have been treated by the students. This student based program has received state and national

recognition and the future of this program is unlimited.
